General Coordination

"Seán Carey: So Alexander considered that golf, rather like ballet, was a difficult activity for most people?
Walter Carrington: Yes, FM thought so. But showing somebody a specific skill like that was a rare event. Overall, what he was trying to do was to show people a more general coordination and application and leave it to the individual concerned to work out what was required in a particular skill.
Seán Carey: And the same was true with his musician pupils? You never encountered him helping someone to figure out how to play the violin or piano?
Walter Carrington: No, never."

Alexanders erstes Anliegen war es, den allgemeinen Gebrauch (des Selbst) seiner Schüler zu verbessern. Das Besondere (der Golfschlag, der Bogenstrich) ist dem Allgemeinen untergeordnet und wird sich verbessern, sobald der allgemeine Gebrauch sich verbessert hat. Umgekehrt ist dies nicht der Fall. So ersetzt der Alexander-Lehrer also auch nicht den Golf-, nicht den Geigen- und nicht den Tanzlehrer.
